glued on disaster! [Aug. 27th, 2007|03:32 pm]
Everything Domestic!

Several months ago I put this sticky tape on the end of my finished wood dresser. It is supposed to keep the cat from scratching the dresser. He had already put on some scratches, but it did help and now he's older and a little better. The problem? The tape will not come off my dresser. It is a sticky, gunky mess and the edge of my dresser looks like a hairy, scratched up, shiny disaster. Peeling does not work, only tiny bits of it will come off. I just tried a bunch of Goo Gone today and it took off some of the top layer, but I'm left with sticky gunk all over the dresser. I tried a scruffy, etc, nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Keep working with the goo-gone. Try using a sponge with it.
Another option is liquid lighter fluid, but you may damage the varnish or paint and it evaporates as you use it, goo-gone doesn't do that.

Oil will remove the sticky residue without damaging the wood finish. Try covering the area with peanut butter or using a cotton ball soaked with veg. or mineral oil.

Oh, I heard someone say: Try using a hair dryer. Glue is supposed to dissolve when exposed to warmth. It may be worth a shot ;)
